Testimonials - From Australian University Students
It’s been a privilege to see increasing numbers of Australian University Students immerse themselves into Fijian culture, expand their global understanding and collaborate with Fiji during our in-country and remote programs.
Here is a sample of recent interviews we’ve recorded with Australian University Students to share their learning and experiences…
This year, Think Pacific facilitated the Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) programme in Fiji for 64 students from Monash University – in partnership with The University of the South Pacific (USP) and other NGO’s and local partners.
The GIG programme is a fieldwork elective unit worth 12 credit points at Monash University, that takes students to one of six countries at the end of their first year to learn from local experts about global issues. This global immersion experience gives young people the opportunity to develop their intercultural competency, global outlook, and employability.
The theme of the programme in Fiji was eco-tourism and conservation in the South Pacific. Across the two weeks, students engaged in classroom seminars and field-based activities that ranged from a panel discussion on climate change with global leaders, a welcoming ceremony performed by the USP iTaukei Students’ Association, a weekend living in a traditional villages to experience indigenous culture and visiting to a castaway islands to explore coral farms and mangrove planting initiatives.
Check out this video of our Study Tour Manager, Susana Vulawalu speaking with Sarah Gosper (Monash) and Anitelu Mata (USP) about how we work together with the University of the South Pacific and Monash University in Australia to facilitate the Global Immersion Guarantee Programme.
What are the positive ripple effects of Study Tours for Fiji?
“We generate income for the economy, the students they purchase our handicrafts and buy foods from our restaurants so they are contributing to the economy. GIG is more than just the three of us, USP, Monash and Think Pacific. It involves a lot of local enterprises and businesses such as Namosi Eco Retreat, Lelevia, Uti Ni Yalo, Students Associations and our local students. It’s really giving back to the local community and our local partners.”
