๐ŸŒบ How Our Bali Art & Creative Experience Supports Local Impact

At Think Pacific, we believe travel should be transformative โ€” not only for students but also for the communities, artists, and cultural traditions we partner with. This expedition is grounded in Baliโ€™s values of Tri Hita Karana; harmony between people, nature, and spirit. Every workshop, performance, and collaboration reflects that balance, ensuring lasting benefits for local artists, creative industries, and cultural heritage.

Hereโ€™s how this programme creates regenerative impact in Bali, aligned with both local values and creativity as a force for good:

1. Supporting Artists & Creative Collectives

Through studio visits and workshops, participants learn from Balinese painters, dancers, musicians, and craftspeople. These artists share their stories, challenges, and visions, offering students an authentic look at how creativity sustains livelihoods and preserves cultural identity. By engaging directly, students help amplify local voices while gaining new perspectives on art as social impact.

2. Strengthening Cultural Livelihoods

Stays in Balinese villages and exchanges with community art groups generate direct benefits for local families and creatives. Host performers, guides, and artisans earn income that stays in the community, while students experience Pawongan (harmony among people) โ€” a living model of collective support through creativity and tradition.

3. Fostering Global Dialogue & Knowledge Exchange

Every creative encounter becomes a space for collaboration. Students join rehearsals, take part in craft workshops, and co-create performances. This two-way exchange allows Balinese artists to share techniques and traditions while students bring fresh ideas, sparking cross-cultural dialogue and mutual learning.

4. Promoting Ethical & Responsible Tourism

This expedition offers an alternative to commercialised cultural tourism. Small-scale, community-first, and rooted in respect, students arrive as learners, not consumers. With pre-departure guidance on Balinese culture and respectful participation, the programme ensures artistic traditions are celebrated and supported โ€” not commodified.

5. Linking Creativity to Sustainability

Many Balinese creatives integrate environmental themes into their work โ€” from eco-friendly crafts and recycled art to performances that tell stories of climate, farming, and conservation. Students see firsthand how Palemahan (harmony with nature) inspires cultural expression and how creativity can be a voice for sustainability.

6. Elevating Local Leadership & Innovation

The programme is co-created with Balinese artists, cultural leaders, and grassroots organisations, ensuring local ownership at every stage. Whether painting in a village studio or rehearsing a temple dance, students learn from those shaping the future of Baliโ€™s creative industries โ€” reinforcing Parahyangan (harmony with spirit) through respect and gratitude.

7. Inspiring the Next Generation of Changemakers

By engaging directly with Baliโ€™s creative pioneers, students return home with new skills, global awareness, and an understanding of how art drives cultural resilience and social change. The programme encourages participants to consider their own role in shaping creative industries that inspire, connect, and empower.

๐ŸŒฟ Conclusion: Creativity as Connection

This expedition is about contributing to a thriving ecosystem of artists and communities who are keeping Baliโ€™s cultural spirit alive. Every experience is designed to be mutually beneficial, aligned with Balinese values, and guided by local voices.

This is regenerative travel through creativity โ€” grounded in Tri Hita Karana โ€” leaving a positive legacy for Baliโ€™s artists and for the students who join them.

Balinese Life - Expectations & Things To Consider

Here’s more about this experience to consider:

Embracing Balinese Life
Life in Bali is guided by community, ceremony and the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, harmony with people, nature, and spirit. Whether youโ€™re in Ubud, a jungle camp, a village homestay, or by the ocean, daily life revolves around connection, rituals, and togetherness. Join in wholeheartedly, whether itโ€™s helping prepare temple offerings, joining a gamelan session, trekking through rice fields, or sharing stories after sunset.

Settle Into Your New Surroundings
Each stage of the journey has its own rhythm, from Ubudโ€™s cultural buzz, to the quiet simplicity of jungle living, to the warmth of your host family in Mas village. Be ready for a mix of simple living and new comforts: bucket showers and open-air kitchens in rural areas, eco-lodges in the jungle, and guesthouses on the coast. Wherever you stay, youโ€™ll be welcomed as part of the community.

Eat Like a Local
Food in Bali is central to culture, family, and wellbeing. Meals are often shared, with rice at the heart of every dish. Expect fragrant nasi campur (mixed rice), fresh vegetables, tempeh, fish, and the famous spicy sambal. Hospitality is generous donโ€™t be surprised if neighbours, relatives, or friends join for a meal or celebration.

Give Yourself Time to Adjust
Bali moves at its own rhythm, shaped by ceremonies, family routines, and natureโ€™s cycles. The pace may be slower than youโ€™re used to, and traditions may feel unfamiliar at first. Itโ€™s normal to feel out of step in the beginning, lean on your host family, teammates, and Think Pacific leaders. Soon, youโ€™ll feel at home in the flow of Balinese life.

Learn Some Language
While many people speak Bahasa Indonesia, in villages youโ€™ll also hear Balinese language. Learning simple greetings and phrases will help you build trust and connection. Weโ€™ll share guides and practice sessions before and during the trip so you can confidently engage with local communities.

Go With the Flow
Bali runs on Jam Karet, โ€œrubber time.โ€ Ceremonies may run long, mealtimes may shift, and plans often adapt around the needs of the community or the environment. Embracing this flexibility is part of the journey, it teaches patience, presence, and the joy of living in the moment.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
From jungle trekking to trying new foods, youโ€™ll face situations that feel unfamiliar or even challenging. These moments are part of the learning experience, they build resilience, confidence, and adaptability.

Simple Living, Different Comforts
Not every stage of the journey will have hot showers, air conditioning, or constant Wi-Fi. Embrace the simplicity, it helps you connect more deeply with nature, people, and yourself. You may experience cold bucket showers, or share accommodation with insects or bugs that you often find in such tropical weather.

Respecting Culture & Ceremony
Balinese life is steeped in ritual and spirituality. You may be invited to join ceremonies or observe sacred practices. Be open, curious, and respectful; wearing appropriate clothing, listening carefully, and following local guidance.

Navigating Group Life
Youโ€™ll be travelling, learning, and reflecting as part of a team. Living in close quarters means patience, communication, and compromise are essential. Sharing circles and group reflections are a chance to process challenges together.

Emotional Adjustment
Exploring wellbeing and mental health can be powerful but also emotional. You may feel homesick, overwhelmed, or stretched by new experiences. Remember youโ€™re supported at all times by your leaders, peers, and host families.

Expect the Unexpected
Plans may change due to weather, ceremonies, or local needs. Flexibility is key; Bali teaches the art of letting go and embracing the moment.

Things to Think About Before Joining

Culture Shock

Life in a rural Balinese village is very different to life in a western city, which brings provides a fascinating experience but also its challenges! The comparatively basic standard of living, the communal nature, the strong religious beliefs and the traditional customs and values in the village, may take time to adjust to. It is completely normal to feel a little out of your depth in the first few days. With the support of your family, your team and our leaders, we find it doesnโ€™t take long to adjust to day-to-day life.

Balinese Language

The majority of Balinese adults speak some English. There may be some language barriers with pronunciation, but as long as you talk slowly and clearly in English there is little difficulty in understanding each other. Young children and some elderly members of the community may not speak any English at all and itโ€™s great to learn a few local words as early as you can

Local Staff

Think Pacific in-country staff support the programme and guide daily activities. We are incredibly proud that the majority of our paid staff, in Indonesia, are local residents.

By investing in local staff we ensure that we are making as positive an impact as possible within the communities where we work by not only providing long-term employment opportunities but also ensuring that those who know the country and the culture best are managing the project and the relationships with local enterprises. Our international staff provide additional support and mentorship 24/7 and enjoy sharing their lived experience of Bali.
