Learn More About Ditui and Suka

Bula! We are Ditui (left) and Suka (right). We live in Votualevu, a suburb in Nadi, located near Fiji’s main international airport. For 15 years, Suka worked as a night security guard at a hotel, but had to leave after being repeatedly robbed and beaten. After a difficult period, we were able to purchase a car and began our small taxi business at a nightclub in Nadi.

With Fiji locking down due to Covid-19, all nightclubs have been closed, and we have lost almost all of our income.

Since buying our car, we have wanted to start a ‘tours and transfers’ business which would offer tourists a unique experience of Nadi, and also take tourists from the airport to their destination. With everything that is happening, we want to make the most of this time to create our dream business, so that we can hit the ground running when tourism is allowed back to Fiji.

Our future hopes are to run our tour company with multiple cars and vans, showing tourists ‘real’ experiences of Fiji in a unique way.

Start-Up Challenges
What Are Your Greatest Challenges?

The greatest challenge with our current business is the difficult hours that working at a nightclub brings.

With Covid-19, the nightclubs have closed and therefore my current business has stopped. We would like to use this opportunity to start our dream business, but we are unsure of where to begin, and how to put a business plan together. We are hoping that this can be the start of a new and exciting tour company in Nadi, allowing tourists the opportunity to see a different side to the ‘tourist capital’ – one where they are able to meet real Fijian people and have a unique experience.

Business Strategy & USP

We have ambitions of starting a ‘tours and transfer’ company, but we are not clear on which area would have the highest demand, or which would be most profitable. The task here could be to identify the direction that our business should be taken in. For example, it may be that it is most profitable to run transfers on Saturdays (if most tourists arrive that day), and then operate the tours from Sunday-Friday. Alternatively, it could prove more profitable to offer no transfer at all, and that tours alone would be sufficient to provide enough income for their family.

We are hoping to offer a unique experience on our tours, which would feel much more like having a local guide/friend, rather than a formal tour that may be offered by large resorts. An additional task would be to outline our business USP and to formalise this as part of our overall strategy.
